Multi-year tax projections

A single-year estimate shows what a family will owe. A projection across several years shows when income, deductions and life events will land, so the family can choose the years in which to act. It is the base that every other part of a plan is built on.

What the projection looks at

We start from prior-year returns and current statements, then project federal and state tax year by year under the family’s expected circumstances.

  • Ordinary income, capital gains and qualified dividends
  • Bracket thresholds and how much room is left in each
  • Phase-outs and surtaxes, including the net investment income tax
  • Medicare premium surcharges (IRMAA) for clients near or in retirement
  • Expected changes such as retirement, a business sale or a move to another state

Why several years instead of one

Many planning decisions only make sense across years: moving income into a low-bracket year, spreading a large gain, or timing deductions so they count. Seeing the years side by side shows where those opportunities are and what each choice costs later.

Questions

Common questions.

How many years does a projection cover?

Typically three to five years, and longer when the family has a known event further out, such as retirement or a business sale.

What documents are needed?

Usually the last one or two federal and state returns, recent pay and investment statements, and a short questionnaire about expected changes.

Do projections include state taxes?

Yes. State tax is projected alongside federal, including the effect of a planned move.
